The Facts (What the scientists say)
Extensive American research published in 1987 (Fast) provided evidence that 56% of women suffer from low back pain during pregnancy. In over 45% of women pain from the low back radiates into the legs and feet.

“By following the fundamental principles of good posture, proper body mechanics”..” and the use of proper footwear, low back pain can be effectively reduced during pregnancy” Maring 1982

According to American research published in 1996 (Vullo) the timing in the onset of symptoms of pain in mid - to late pregnancy gave evidence that biomechanical factors play a larger role in the cause of pain than hormonal influences.

“Back pain is a common complaint of women during pregnancy. It is frequently dismissed as trivial and inevitable” Perkins 1998

“ One of two pregnant women experience some type of back pain". This lowers the quality of life and causes absence from work for many women.” Ostgard 1996

“Treatment” of low back pain during pregnancy “ is often unsuccessful because the problem is not well defined.” Ostgaard
1996.

There is “confusion concerning where these women should be treated”. Ostgaard 1996

Research argues “for a more active approach to the prevention and management of back pain during pregnancy” Perkins 1998

“Back pain is a common symptom in association with pregnancy” MacEvilly 1996

“There are many anatomical changes during pregnancy that could potential lead to substantial alterations in gait” Foti 2000

“Gait deviations may contribute to a variety of musculoskeletal overuse conditions associated with pregnancy such as low back, hip and calf pain” Foti 2000

Key American research in 2000 (Foti) provided evidence that during pregnancy there is an increased demand placed on key muscle groups in the hip and ankle muscles during walking.

“ Lower extremity pain is common in women of childbearing age” Vullo 1996

American research published in 1996 (Vullo) indicated that pregnant and women following pregnancy are more likely to develop new lower limb pain than non-pregnant women.

Research clearly highlights that the cause of back and lower limb pain during pregnancy is associated with an increase in weight and ligament softening. This may include all or some of the following discomfort;

Foot pain
Ankle pain
Heel pain
Shin pain
Knee pain
Hip pain
Low Back pain
Postural fatigue

Mothersteps is a unique product that has been designed to address the needs of the pregnant woman and reduce the excess demands put upon the foot and leg. This in turn reducing associated pain and discomfort.
